How our personal data is protected in Belarus

Belarus is one of the few countries which have no law on protection of personal data. This situation causes a number of problems:

  • in fact, state bodies and business entities collect and use our personal data without any control;
  • we are not allowed to know who, when, and why collects our personal data, who receives it from state databases;
  • no one controls how business entities collect, retain, process, and use personal data;
  • our personal data is retained for unjustifiably long term which is not corresponding with the purpose it is collected for;
  • we hear constantly about leaks or illegal use of information retained in the databases of state bodies, or, for example, banks or mobile operators.
