Strasbourg, 03.05.2013 – Marina Schuster (Germany, ALDE), newly appointed General Rapporteur of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) on the abolition of the death penalty*, and Andres Herkel (Estonia, EPP/CD), rapporteur on the situation in Belarus, have expressed their dismay at the first death sentence handed down in Belarus since the execution of the purported Minsk metro bombers in 2012. Earlier this week, Mr Yazepchuk was sentenced to death for killing a cellmate.

Activists of the campaign “Human Rights Defenders against the Death Penalty” created an animated film entitled “The Queue”, which touches on deep philosophical subjects: human life and the indifference of society in relation to the issue of the death penalty.

This was reported by the Ministry of Justice in response to inquiry of the RHRPA "Belarusian Helsinki Committee". From 2 to 9 judgements of death have been delivered annually in Belarus since the beginning of the 21st century. It is known that 3 people were sentenced to death in 2011. That information was provided by the Ministry of Justice at the end of last year.

Since the beginning of the 21st century from 2 to 9 judgements of death have been delivered annually in Belarus. It is known that 3 people were sentenced to death in 2011. That information was provided by the Ministry of Justice on request of the BHC* at the end of last year. Moreover, the Ministry of Justice reported that there had been no death sentences within the first 9 months of 2012.

Our country is the last one in Europe and on the post-Soviet space where the death penalty is still used.

The first issue of the electronic journal «Brainstorm» has come out. The journal is dedicated to the situation in Belarus, necessary reforms and experience of its neighbors. The Editor in Chief, Ales Mikhalevich, wrote an appeal to the readers: "The main purpose of all this is to arouse a deep and meaningful conversation. The journal is called "Brainstorm. We think about Belarus", because in the English language “brainstorm” means a method of working, when all the ideas are listened to and if they are not hopeless, they are implemented."
