BELARUSIAN HELSINKI COMMITTEE APPEALS TO INVESTIGATIVE COMMITTEE ON MASS TORTURE OF PEOPLE IN BELARUS

22.08.2020

The Belarusian Helsinki Committee has appealed to the Investigative Committee (IC) on mass torture, ill-treatment and politically motivated violence in Belarus. Human rights activists demand to investigate them and bring to justice the parties at fault. The BHC draws the IC's attention to the fact that the agency has all the information to initiate a criminal case.

The appeal calls for the creation of an "investigative group with operational support at all territorial divisions of the Investigative Committee", immediate collection of video materials at the police stations and detention facilities, orders of law enforcement units, use of medical documents, interrogation of witnesses, victims and suspected offenders. Human rights activists are also demanding to dismiss from their posts a group of ‎militsiya chiefs including the Minister of Internal Affairs, and to ensure "maximum public awareness on the progress of the investigation."
