Ales Bialiatski, the most famous Belarusian human rights activist, has been in prison for almost two years since August 4th, 2011. Ales Bialiatski, the imprisoned leader of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” and Vice-President of the International Federation for Human Rights, has been bestowed Honorary Freedom (Citoyen d’honneur) of the City of Paris, after his nomination was supported by the Council of the city’s 11th arrondissement and the Mayor’s Office.

The imprisoned head of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” and vice-president of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) Ales Bialiatski writes that he is still trying to answer all congratulations he receives on his 50th birthday. He counted about 700 by 4 October.

The information that Ales Bialiatski was put in a penal cell, disseminated by the informational and educational institution “Platform”, was not confirmed. The Human Rights Center “Viasna” learned about it after Bialiatski’s counsel had a meeting with him at Babruisk penal colony #2.
